NON-SPOILERY VERSION:
many, many years into the future, the earth decides to eradicate the human race by enacting 'world death'. in an effort to preserve humanity and prevent extinction, the few survivors retreated underground in hopes of avoiding the earth's self-inflicted natural disasters. humans spent many centuries in this confined space until eventually forgetting what life was originally like above. occasionally, alarms would resound to warn the citizens of the tokyo residential complex of a danger no one seemed to know the details of.
takumi spent his life in the TRC as a completely average guy. he attended school, studied, and went about his business without thinking too deeply about humanity's current living conditions.
one day, he and his childhood friend wander into a strange, uninhabited area of the complex and are separated. it's then that the sirens in the complex blare, and it becomes apparent that they are a warning signal for an alien invasion. still looking for his friend, takumi meets a strange egg-shaped creature that offers him a blade. it says he must use it to save his friend, to which he refuses.
he eventually finds his friend again, but they are quickly overwhelmed by a group of aliens. the creature reappears and once again offers takumi the blade. he accepts it this time, stabs himself in the heart, and undergoes a magical transformation. his new powers allow him to cut away the aliens surrounding his friend with a large sword, but before he can speak with her properly, it's too late.
takumi is whisked away from the complex to another place entirely...
he wakes up in a large school and is told by the creature—named sirei—that he and a few others have been chosen to protect humanity against 'world death' and the aliens invading the earth. by using that blade, his magical blood will allow him to defend the school and the ultimate weapon that will save humanity hidden inside.
this operation will last one hundred days. can he make it?

TLDR: humanity basically destroyed earth through nuclear warfare and environmental destruction, boarded a satellite to find a new planet to inhabit, discovered futurum (a planet strikingly similar in makeup to earth), incited war against the innocent intelligent lifeforms there, eventually stole strong magical alien DNA from one of futurum's people, and then created takumi and a few others in a lab using this DNA to send them to war and conquer the new planet.
there are 100 different endings in the game and only on certain occasions does takumi learn the full extent of humanity's past and his role in the war. he was taught to "fight for humanity" and injected full of false memories of being human to strengthen his desire to protect humanity itself.
takumi's personality can drastically change depending on the decisions selected in his canon. i'm defaulting to his earnest, good puppy boy persona from the 'truth' ending(s). come back later for deranged takumi; i plan to get 100/100 endings.
